I think i'm actually going to change the cue for the right side finsh. I was out at the park last night and again tried to tell him "around" and work on getting him there and hes so speedy he just wanted to run off lol. Im going to see if I can get him to switch to the word "wrap" and use the hand signal to assist in that change.. We'll see!
Here is our right side finish. And if I wanted him to sit I would tell him. I’m contemplating changing the word for when I use it in disc. Because I’ve been using the same word “around” but in disc he goes around my right and runs after the disc when as when in rally I want him to stop in heel. I think this was usually okay but recently I tried to get him into heel outside with a ball and he kept running forward 😅 I think maybe it’ll be easier to stop using the work for disc and change the cue for that one because he relies heavily on my just showing him with the disc to go around. Does that make sense?
Yes, I think it totally makes sense to have 2 separate cues for that!
I would recommend feeding him how you do in your last reward, to get him a little bit closer to your body for heel position.
You could also do a few reps of marking sooner and using your reward to lure him in close. Does that make sense?
I love how he stands still afterwards; that’s great recognition of being in the right spot. :-) (Except he’s a tiny bit wide.)
Ok great, save the autosit for down the line. You don’t even technically need an autosit for Rally anyway.
Level 6 is coming your way!
he doesn’t have an auto sit. Though he will sometimes sit if I wait to long to tell him something 😅 or just because but I haven’t focused on an auto sit and will usually just tel him sit. So I will wait to work through that with you! i think I need you to send me level 6
I saw your reply just in time for dinner training. Here’s a couple videos I got with steps in heel with a barrier. I mostly kept it to one or two steps during our training session but for the last video you can see I did more and he did well!
Beautiful! This is absolutely perfect. Nice high head the whole time. You're ready for Level 6.
Does he have an autosit in heel? That's discussed in Level 6. If he doesn't have an autosit yet, I would actually recommend waiting to train one, because it can get in the way of teaching the dog to self-correct their position (usually self-correcting forging/crabbing). And if he already has one, that's okay too!
Okay we have been practicing this and hes doing pretty good. Also ive been practicing the isolated continuous pivots and focusing on keeping his head up. If we are ready to keep moving forward should I start the stuff in level 5 for the wrap finish? Griffey does know how to go around my right side to finish though I havent focused on him sitting so if I want him to I will just tell him. I can show you what we've got with a video of that?
And here I trick him with my left hand in front of me and he keeps his head up better. So do I bring my hand to the front? Would I still go to the back to get the food and reward so he doesn’t try to get ahead of me?
The verbal cue is actually an extra helper cue, and so people sometimes say it at different times. The handler stepping is a huge cue already. I like to have the verbal cue to work on cueing my dog to scoot their booty in extra, when they need to. But I introduce it in left turns. Generally, whichever cue you want to be stronger (verbal vs body language) is what you want to say first.
In Rally, you can use this verbal cue forever, so it doesn't really matter which cue is stronger.
So I would run with what is working! :-)
Oh, the hand placement difference is interesting! It definitely helps. He's not looking at your hand, so it's interesting that the hand cues him somehow.
For the food delivery: You did it exactly how I do. People often find that maneuver overwhelming, so be proud of yourself! You're in the cool club now. 😎
I think practicing the "isolated continuous pivot" is going to be helpful for just teaching him the muscle memory of pivoting with his head up, since that exercise includes a lure.
I went back and read level 5 on adding the cue. I was saying it before turning and he was dropping his head. I saw you said to say it while turning and I think that’s helping but also still see him drop his head some. But it comes back up so is it okay?
Here are the two quarter turns for level 5. I noticed while watching back that in the second type (moving while he eats) he is over turning a bit. Ill need to watch out for that more. I've been mostly watching to see if he'll keep his head up as he was dropping it a lot at the beginning.
For level 4 I dont know if we should do the turns in it since he can do it this way already? For L4 homework 3-- We used to train weekly in our local petstore, we would work on heeling back and forth and they looked forward to us coming in. We havent done this since corona started so I really need to get us back out there. Im thinking we could go use some parking lots! Mixing it up so they are different locations and work on engagement only since its been a little while since we've practiced outdoors. I dont know if i'll be able to get video but i'll try or at least let you know how its going.
For L4 hw 4-- we have ran courses before so I am pretty familiar with the signs!
This is great! I love how his head stays up through the turn.
At the very end of video 1 (last rep), I would have liked to see his rear scoot another inch in. But I do see that in the last video, he is over-pivoting. Go ahead and add the verbal cue (see level 5), and then you're ready to move on.
You also can feel free to practice other turns besides quarter turns - trying 1/8th turns, slightly more than a quarter turn, etc. :-)
Level 4 you are all good to move on from. :-) And I love parking lots for training!
