Create Your First Freestyle Routine
I “attended” my new online course Create Your First Freestyle Routine with my own dog Cupid for its first round, which wrapped up this month. I’m very happy with the curriculum, and it did successfully lead us and a few others to have fully written a 2-6 minute dog dance routine, as planned. We all had so much fun, and I’m very excited to run this class again.
Once you can dance your way through your skills, connecting with your dog for “normal” training feels different. You have an increased understanding of your body language cues. You know how to play together, and you know how to have a dialogue with your dog.
In Create Your First Freestyle Routine, we explore different themes and mood, discuss song choices, and workshop tricks together. We also workshop fading lures, isolating verbal cues, using props, using rewards in a routine smoothly, fading off of rewards, general concepts of chaining and duration, and general “good training” practices. Your routine can be designed for dog shows or just to perform in your living room for your family.

Teams looking to add more fun and enthusiasm to their training: Many times, training focused on behavior modification and/or competition can inherit a certain heavy feeling.
